Description:
BENJAMIN WEST CLINEDINST (American, 1859-1931)
Man with his Dog before a Hearth, 1884
Oil on canvas
2-1/4 x 17-3/4 inches (5.7 x 45.1 cm)
Signed, dated, and inscribed upper right: B.W. Clinedinst Paris 84

This beautiful scene of a farmer warming himself in front of a fire with a dog curled contentedly near his feet is an outstanding example of Benjamin Clinedinst's early work as a genre painter. He produced it in Paris, when he was 25 years old, during the period he was training with history painter Alexandre Cabanel at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. In 1884, the same year he painted this work, he exhibited in the Paris Salon, and one of his paintings, Peace, was purchased by the French government.

Clinedinst's solid academic training in France held him in good stead once he returned to the United States in 1886. Settling in Baltimore for a time, Clinedinst began painting genre scenes in earnest and also began a long-term focus on depicting American Colonial history in his paintings. Following his marriage in 1888 he moved to New York City where he taught art at the Gotham Art School and began exhibiting at the National Academy of Design where he was elected an Associate member. In 1896 he became a founder of the Society of Illustrators, along with Robert Blum (whose work is represented in this auction), Charles Dana Gibson and Howard Pyle. During the 1890s, Clinedinst, in addition to his career as an educator, became a prolific illustrator and portrait painter. He did regular work for Scribner's and Century magazines, and illustrated books for Nathaniel Hawthorne, Harriet Beecher Stowe and Mark Twain. Among his portrait subjects were Theodore Roosevelt, Commodore Matthew Perry and Mark Twain. He was named for the American artist, Benjamin West (1738-1820), because of his father's admiration for West's painting, Death on a Pale Horse.
