6 x 9-1/2 inches (15.2 x 24.1 cm)

PROVENANCE:
Spanierman Gallery, New York (label verso).

This view of a town glimpsed across the water is the work of the widely traveled and wealthy artist Edward Darley Boit.

Known for his picturesque paintings, especially of Venice, Boit was born in Boston, maintained lavish apartments in Paris and Venice, and died in Rome. This landscape was painted in 1882, the same year that John Singer Sargent painted what is arguably the most psychologically compelling portrait of his career, The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit, in the Boit family's Paris apartment. It now hangs in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, between the two tall blue-and-white Japanese vases depicted in the work which were donated to the museum by the Boit family. In 1919, the four sisters portrayed in Sargent's painting gave their portrait to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in memory of their father.

Boit, Edward Darley:. American painter, 1842-1916
