Description:
JEAN PIERRE CASSIGNEUL (French, b. 1935)
L'Ensoleillé Véranda
Oil on canvas
32 x 23-3/4 inches (81.3 x 60.3 cm)
Signed lower left: Cassigneul

PROVENANCE:
Acquired from Wally Findley Gallery (#30214), New York;
Doyle New York, Modern & Contemporary and European Art 2007 , lot 43;
Private collection, Los Angeles, California.

Painter, printmaker, and illustrator Jean-Pierre Cassigneul specializes in Fauve-inspired portraits of women and still lifes accentuating vivid color, bold outlines, and patterning. Works like L'Ensoleillé Veranda clearly reference Henri Matisse, not merely in the jewel-tone coloration, but in the compositional conceit of a window opening onto a terrace and a background seascape view. Cassigneul trained at the École des Beaux-Arts and has exhibited at the Salon d'Automne, Salon de la Jeune Peinture, and at one-man shows in France, New York, and Tokyo. At the 1977 Meubles Tableaux (Furniture Paintings) Exhibition at the Centre Pompidou, he received attention for his Louis XIV-style occasional table painted with female figures.
