Description:
MYRTLE JEAN MACLANE (American, 1878-1964)
Against the Red Cliffs of Devon, circa 1926-1927
Oil on canvas
36 x 45 inches (91.4 x 114.3 cm)
Signed lower left: Myrtle MacLane

PROVENANCE:
Estate of the Artist.

EXHIBITED:
National Academy of Design, as Red Cliffs, 1928;
Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, 1929;
Rhode Island School of Design.

Noted for her Expressionist portraits of women and children, Jean MacLane studied figure painting with John Vanderpoel at the Art Institute of Chicago, Frank Duveneck in Cincinnati, and William Merritt Chase in New York. Together with her husband, the artist John C. Johansen, MacLane helped found the National Foundation of Portrait Painters in 1912, the same year that she was elected associate member of the National Academy of Design. Both The Pool and Against the Red Cliffs of Devon highlight many of MacLane's signature motifs: lithe, undulating female bodies, often positioned in friezes or from behind; sharp, moody lighting heightening a palette of earth tones; and abstracted reflections in pools of water.

For a commissioned, multi-artist portrait of the Allied leaders from World War I, now hanging in the National Museum of American Art, Washington, D.C., MacLane painted the only female subject, Queen Elisabeth of Belgium. Her paintings can also be seen at the Art Institute of Chicago; San Antonio Museum of Art; and Toledo Museum of Art.

MacLane, Myrtle Jean:. American painter, 1878-1964
